Twenty years in and I have never settled, which people used to tell me I would. I have gone through phases of leaning one way for a couple of years at a time, and then it moves, usually when something else in my life changes. I have stopped looking for the underlying rule.
Fifty five, Brooklyn. Three partnerships, the longest nine years, ending three years ago when she decided to move back to where her family are. We speak. It was sad and nobody behaved badly.
What I want now is quiet and long. I have no interest in being anywhere loud, I do not want to meet a large number of people, and I would be perfectly happy if the whole thing consisted of one person, one evening a week, and a lot of ordinary company around it.
The thing I have to offer that I did not have at thirty five is that I am not in a hurry and I am extremely hard to alarm. Very little in this is new to me. I am also considerably less interested in being impressive than I was, which I gather is an improvement.
Not looking for anybody who wants a guide to the last twenty years of any of this. Not looking for somebody at the very beginning, because I do not think I would be good at it and it is fairer to say so. And not looking for anything that requires me to be somewhere at eleven at night.
