I work nights, so the hours I am awake, rested and free are the hours when everybody else is at a desk. That has exactly one consequence here and it is a large one. The only people who can realistically be my regular partner are other people with strange lives: shift workers, freelancers, students, the retired, anybody between jobs.
Ten years in, thirty nine, south east. My last partnership ran five years and ended when my rota changed and hers did not, and we spent about eight months pretending that was survivable before either of us said anything. I am not doing that again, which is why the timetable is in the first paragraph rather than the fifth.
What I can offer is a Wednesday afternoon that is completely mine, a Thursday the same, and a person who is fully awake at two in the afternoon when most of this city is not. What I cannot offer is a Friday evening, ever, or a Saturday.
I would like something long and regular rather than occasional. A standing afternoon, the same two days, with one person, for as long as it works. I am not looking for variety. I have very little social energy left over after the job and I would rather spend all of it on one person.
Not looking for anybody who will suggest I change shifts, because I have costed that and the answer is no. Not looking for something that only exists at weekends. And not looking for anyone who wants to be messaged throughout the day, since I am asleep for most of it.
