Nine years between us, and a house bought at the right moment.

We bought a house at a moment that will not come again and it has a room in it we do not otherwise use. That single fact has changed what this is for us more than any amount of practice has, and it has also taught us something slightly unpleasant, which is how quickly people become warm towards a couple who have somewhere to go.

That is not a complaint and it is certainly not an accusation. It is a housing problem rather than a character problem, and we know it, and we would probably have done the same at twenty five in a flat share. We are just saying it out loud because we have twice ended up in a friendship that turned out to be about the room, and both times it was awkward to unpick.

We are forty one and forty four, south east, together nine years. She is the one who ties and I am the one who does not, mostly, although that has been drifting lately.

What we would like is friends. People we would see anyway. If some of those evenings end up happening here, lovely, and if none of them do that is fine too.

Not looking for a third. Not looking for an arrangement of any kind that has terms attached. And not looking for anybody who opens by asking about the room, which has happened enough times now that we are slightly funny about it.
