We are going in roughly a year. The job that is taking us is decided, the lease ends in the summer, and there is no version of this where we stay. We are posting anyway, and we thought the honest thing was to put the expiry date in the first paragraph rather than let somebody find it out in month four.
We are in our early thirties, north of the river, five years each into this and about two years into actually knowing anybody. That late start is the whole reason for the post. We spent three years doing this entirely privately, finally got brave, made a handful of friends, and are now leaving.
What we would like out of the next year is more of that. People to see. Evenings that are not an event. Possibly one couple or one person we get properly close to, with everybody understanding from the start that in a year it becomes phone calls and occasional visits.
We are aware that asking somebody to invest in a friendship with a countdown on it is a strange request. Half the people we have said it to have shrugged and said everybody moves eventually, and the other half have gone quiet, and we would rather know which you are now.
Not looking for anything that assumes permanence. Not looking for a third, which we have said in every version of this post since the first one. And not looking to be talked into staying, since the decision took two years and is made.
