Nobody knows. Not one person. We have been doing this in our own house for eleven years and we have never met another human being who does it, which we did not think was strange until we read a few of these and worked out that everybody else appears to have friends.
We are in our fifties, out in the commuter belt, married nineteen years. Everything we know came out of books and then out of trial and error and then out of a long stretch where we stopped learning anything at all and simply repeated ourselves, which is where we still are.
What we would like is to know one other couple. Not to do anything with. To have dinner with, and to be able to mention this over the pudding without a whole preamble, and possibly to find out whether the way we have done it for eleven years is normal or extremely peculiar.
We are aware this is a modest request and that the board is mostly people looking for something more definite. We considered dressing it up. Then we decided that at our age we should ask for what we actually want, which is company in a subject we have kept entirely to ourselves for over a decade.
Not looking for anybody to join us in anything. Not looking to be introduced to a large group, at least not yet, because we would both find that difficult. And not looking for anything that has to be secret from our own household, since there is nobody else in it.
