My contract has three years left on it and after that I genuinely do not know. I could stay. I could be sent somewhere. Nobody on this board has any patience for people who are vague about that, and rightly, because half of us have been left by somebody whose situation turned out to be temporary all along.
Thirty one, Kreuzberg, five years in. Both of my partnerships here ended when the other person went home, and in both cases they had known for months and told me late. That is the specific thing I will not do to anybody.
So: three years, probably. What I would like inside them is not a holiday romance. It is a proper standing partnership, twice a week, with somebody who is willing to build something knowing roughly when it changes shape. I have watched people do that well. It requires both of you to stop pretending the end is not coming and to make the middle good instead.
I am aware that a fixed window rules me out for a lot of people and that this is completely reasonable. I would rather be ruled out now.
Not looking for anything casual, since casual is exactly what a countdown pushes people towards and it is not what I want. Not looking for somebody who will treat the end date as a reason to hold back. And not looking for anyone who is also leaving in eighteen months, because between us we would have no chance at all.
