I grew up here, in a part of the city nobody on this board has been to, and in seven years of doing this I have been the only person from Berlin in the room more often than not. That is not a complaint. The scene here is what it is because people came, and I have benefited from that enormously.
It does have one effect that took me years to name. Everybody I meet is having an adventure and I am simply living at home. There is a difference in register between those two things and it shows up in the small stuff: what people expect a weekend to look like, how they talk about their flat, whether they know what the city was like before.
Twenty nine, out west, seven years in. What I want is somebody who is here for good, whatever their passport says. That is the whole of my requirement and it has nothing to do with where anybody is from.
I would like a long partnership. I have watched several of them fail here for the same reason and I would like to be in one of the ones that does not.
Not looking for anybody who describes this city as a phase they are going through. Not looking for something that has to be arranged around visits home. And not looking to be anybody's guide to the real Berlin, which I have been asked to be twice and which is a genuinely odd thing to ask a person.
