Everybody says this city is too big for that. It is not. I started seeing somebody in the spring and within a month had worked out that he had been with four people I know, two of them well, and that I was the only person at the table who had not known this from the beginning.
Nobody hid it. This is Berlin and nobody hides anything, which is one of the better things about it. It simply had not come up, because in a scene this size nobody thinks to mention a history from three years ago in a different district.
Thirty three, Kreuzberg, six years in. What I have learned is that the size of a scene changes nothing about its density. People cluster. The same fifty people circulate inside a room of five hundred and you find that out at the wrong moment.
So I ask early now, and I ask plainly, and I have found that everybody answers without the slightest embarrassment, which is genuinely one of the things I like about doing this here. What I want is one person, over a long stretch, and enough overlap in our lives to be real without it being total.
Not looking for anybody who is currently involved with a friend of mine. Not looking for someone who considers the question rude. And not looking for something short, since short is what produces all this in the first place.
