About once a month somebody asks whether I would be their practice partner. It is asked politely, the terms are always clear, and nobody has ever been anything but straightforward with me about it. I have said yes three times and each arrangement did exactly what it said it would, which is the problem.
Thirty, Friedrichshain, four years in. What I want is a relationship. I want somebody who knows what my week has been like, who I go on holiday with, and who ties me because we are together rather than because the hours have to go somewhere.
I am not criticising practice partnerships. They are one of the better inventions in this and they work precisely because everybody is honest about what they are. My difficulty is that I kept accepting them while quietly hoping, which was nobody's fault but mine and which cost me about three years.
So I am now extremely boring and clear. If what you are looking for is a regular partner for the hours, we should not start, however well we get on.
Not looking for a practice arrangement, at all, in any well-run form. Not looking for somebody who has a partner already and a gap in the week. And not looking to be told that this is what everybody says at four years in and that I will get over it.
