Four in six years. One went back to Australia, one took a job in Zurich, one finished a doctorate and went home to Chile, and the fourth simply decided in a February that she had had enough of the winters. I liked all of them. None of it was anybody's fault, and I have begun to take it personally anyway, which is why I am writing this rather badly on a Sunday evening.
Thirty six, Neukölln, six years in and here permanently. My work is here, my sister is here, and I am not going anywhere.
What I want is somebody who is either from here or has decided to be. I know how that reads in a city where a very large proportion of the room is on a three year plan, and I have concluded that being picky about one thing and relaxed about everything else is a sensible way to run a search.
The rest of what I want is unremarkable. A standing evening, one person, over years rather than seasons. Somebody whose family I meet eventually. Somebody I could be bored with.
Not looking for anybody whose plans depend on a job that might move them. Not looking for something intense and short, which I have now had four times and which does not get easier. And not looking to be told that everything is temporary really, which is true in a way that is no help to anybody.
