We stopped four years ago because his mother moved in with us and there was simply nowhere and no time. She died in the autumn and after a decent interval we found ourselves in a very quiet flat looking at each other, and we have started again, and it is nothing like we remembered.
The knowledge is all there. Everything else is a beat behind. He knows exactly what he means to do and his hands take longer to do it, and I have discovered that I have to relearn how to say things at the right moment rather than three seconds late.
We are forty six and fifty, Kreuzberg, together twenty two years and sixteen years of rope each before the gap.
What we would like is people to be rusty in front of, which sounds like a strange request. It is easier to be visibly out of practice with somebody who understands what that means than to pretend at home that everything is where we left it.
Not looking for a third, or for anybody to be involved in what we do. Not looking for instruction, since we know what to do and simply need to do it a hundred more times. And not looking to talk at length about the four years, which were hard and are over.
