I did this properly in my thirties and then married a man who did not want to hear about it, and that lasted seventeen years and ended in the winter. I am fifty four and I have spent six months working out which parts of myself were put away on purpose and which were simply lost.
This is one of the ones that was put away, and it turns out to be entirely intact.
Prenzlauer Berg. What has surprised me is how much easier it is here than it was where I did it before. Nobody has been startled. Nobody has explained anything to me at length. Two people have asked practical questions and then talked about something else, and I found that more welcoming than any amount of warmth would have been.
What I want is a long partnership with somebody around my own age who has some history of their own. I would like to move slowly, meet properly, and not have any of it treated as remarkable.
Not looking for anybody who wants to hear about the marriage, which was long and dull at the end and is finished. Not looking for a man who finds a woman of fifty four coming back to this either brave or poignant. And not looking to make up for lost time, which is a phrase people keep using at me and which describes nothing I recognise.
