Everything we want to go to is an hour away and finishes at a time that makes the drive home genuinely unpleasant. We did it for three years, faithfully, most weekends. Then we had a child and stopped, and the honest truth is that we have missed it a good deal less than we expected to.
Thirty five and thirty seven, out in the 905, together nine years. What we have instead is a house with room in it and nobody through the wall, which is the trade everybody makes out here and which we would make again tomorrow. Our life is quieter, it is entirely ours, and none of it requires a lobby or a person at a desk.
What we do miss is people. Not events: people. We would rather know two or three couples properly than see fifty faces occasionally, and that has been hard to build from out here, because the ordinary way you come to know somebody is by repeatedly ending up in the same room by accident.
So this is a practical post. We are looking for a couple who would come out for a Saturday, or who would meet us somewhere in between, or who are also out this way and equally stranded. We have space, we cook a great deal, and we are usually free in the daytime at weekends and almost never in the evening.
