Three generations under one roof, which in our case means his parents on the main floor, us upstairs, and his grandmother in what used to be the dining room. Nine of us if you count his brother's family at the weekend. Not one of them knows anything about this, and the logistics of that are easily the most interesting thing about us.
We are thirty and thirty two, North York, together six years. This is not a hardship post. The house is warm, somebody is always cooking, our costs are a fraction of what our friends downtown pay and we would not swap any of it. It simply means the answer to the question of where this happens is: not here, ever, under any circumstances at all.
In practice that is a hotel a few times a year and a friend's place when she is away, and that is the whole of it. We plan months in advance. We have become very good at a particular kind of quiet arithmetic about who is home and when, which we have applied to nothing else in our lives.
What we would like is another couple in a similar position, or honestly anybody who will not suggest we simply move out, which is a suggestion that comes from people who have not looked at what a second bedroom costs here. We would like friends who get it without a preamble.
