Six hundred square feet, one closet, and a bed that folds into a wall. Everything we own that relates to this lives in a duffel bag underneath that bed, and there is a running joke in our building about how often the two of us appear to be going camping. We are not going camping. We have never been camping in our lives.
Twenty seven and twenty eight, downtown, together three years. We are cheerful about the space because being anything else would be exhausting: this is what two people our age can afford here and we would still rather live in it than an hour out with a spare room. The neighbours are close on all four sides and we have become extremely considerate people.
It does mean everything is planned. There is no spontaneous version of our life. Sunday afternoon works, evenings mostly do not, and the whole thing fits around a shared wall with a man who works nights and deserves better than us.
What we would like is another couple to be friends with. That is the entire ask. We do not know many people who do this and the ones we do know are a decade older and own things with stairs in them. We would like two people we can have dinner with, complain about our buildings with, and see often enough that it turns into a habit.
