Two people have now told me that I am here for the wrong reason, and both of them were more or less right. I am not interested in rope for its own sake and I never have been. What I am interested in is an evening where one person is looking at me and at nothing else, and this turned out to be the way I could ask for that without having to explain myself first.
Thirty six, downtown, five years in. The first man to say so was quite serious about it. He felt I was using something he cared about as a delivery system for something else, and I could not really argue, because I was. The second said it more kindly and meant exactly the same thing.
I have thought about it a great deal since and I have landed here: I am not going to manufacture a passion I do not have in order to be an acceptable partner. Plenty of people are in this for the practice itself and I admire it. I am in it because there is no other hour in my week when a person is not also looking at a screen.
So I am after somebody for whom that is enough, and I suspect that person exists. A relationship. Regular evenings. Somebody who ties because it is what the two of us do rather than because they are keeping a count. If this makes you feel I would waste your time, you are probably right, and no hard feelings.
