Everybody at everything assumes I am there with somebody. It is never rude and it is entirely consistent: a woman my age in that room gets read as an attachment, somebody's partner along for the evening, and the questions I am asked are the ones you ask a spouse rather than the ones you ask a person who is looking.

Fifty two, North York, fourteen months into this. My marriage ended after twenty six years and I came to rope from a standing start, having wanted it quietly for most of that time and done precisely nothing about it, which I understand is a common story and does not feel common when it is yours.

The assumption is doing real damage to my chances, so I am stating it plainly. I am on my own. I am not accompanying anyone. There is no partner in the background whose permission is relevant to anything. I am a beginner in practice and not in judgement, having run a household and a small business for a quarter of a century.

What I want is one person, patient, ideally near my own age or at least somebody who will not find my age either novel or poignant. I would like to be told the things I do not know without the telling becoming the entire relationship. And at some point I would like somebody to ask me what I think.

Before you answer this one

You would be the one tying. These three are about what the person in the rope actually needs.
