Count the hours with me. Two evenings a week is what I can offer, and each of those evenings costs about ninety minutes in the car before it starts and the same again afterwards. So the real number is closer to nine hours than four, and every one of them comes out of the same week as a job, a mortgage and two parents who need more from me than they used to.

Thirty five, out in the 905, five years in. I lead with it because it is what actually ends things. My last partnership ran three years and died the way they do out here: not in an argument, just in a slow accumulation of Thursdays where one of us said we should probably skip this week.

So the question I want answered early is not whether you like me. It is whether you can look at that arithmetic and still want it in eighteen months, in February, on an evening when the highway is a parking lot and it would have been ours.

What I want in return is worth the drive. One person, for a long time, with a standing evening we both protect. I am extremely reliable once something is in my calendar and I do not cancel for a better offer, because at this distance there is no such thing as a casual one.

Before you answer this one

You would be the one tying. These three are about what the person in the rope actually needs.
