Describe year three to me. Not the first evening, not the negotiating, not the careful early part that everybody writes about at length. Tell me what a Tuesday is like when two people have been doing this for three years, know each other's habits and have run out of things to discover. That is the part I have never reached and the part I actually want.
Thirty, out in the 905, four years in. Both of my partnerships ended somewhere around month fifteen, and in both cases what ran out was novelty rather than affection. We had nothing left to establish and neither of us knew what the thing was supposed to become once it was established.
I have asked a few people who have been in something long, and the answers were useful and slightly boring, which I take as a good sign. It becomes ordinary. It becomes an evening you defend the way you defend anything else you like. One woman told me it stops being an event and starts being a habit, and that she noticed the change about two years in.
So I would like to hear from somebody who wants exactly that. Not an intense beginning. A long, unremarkable middle, with the same person, on the same evening, for years. If your post is entirely about the first three months, I suspect we want different things.
