Fifty five. That is going to be the most interesting fact about me to a great many of the people who read this, which is exactly why it is in the first line rather than buried at the bottom where I used to keep it. I have stopped softening it and I have stopped adding the reassuring paragraph that used to follow.
The west end, twenty two years in this, both directions throughout. The visible half of the rope scene here is somewhere in its late twenties and thirties, which is fine and is how it has always been everywhere. It does mean that at anything I go to I am either invisible or I am a curiosity, and the second one is worse.
I am not going to make a case for myself. Twenty two years is twenty two years. My knees have views, my patience is far better than it used to be, and I have almost no interest left in impressing anybody, which is the one real advantage of getting older and is a considerable one.
What I want is a person for a long stretch, both directions, and I do not much mind how old they are provided my age is not a subject we keep returning to. I would like an evening a week that belongs to us. I would like to be somebody's ordinary partner rather than anybody's discovery.
Not looking for anyone who wants to tell me I look well for it.
