The journey is the reason my last thing ended and I did not see it coming, because for eighteen months I had insisted it was fine. It was fine right up until the evening I sat down on the platform at eleven at night and could not make myself get up, and understood that I had been quietly furious for about four months.
Twenty six, the Jersey side, two and a half years into this. What I am asking for is not that somebody live nearby. It is that we sit down at the start and work out who is travelling, how often, and what happens on the weeks when neither of us can face it. That conversation takes twenty minutes and I have never once had it before starting something.
What I can offer is a person who is genuinely committed to a regular evening, who does not cancel, and who has a car about one weekend in three. What I cannot offer is spontaneity, or a weeknight in a distant borough after a full day.
I would rather have something modest and reliable than something ambitious that collapses. Twice a month, the same two evenings, for two years, would be a better outcome for me than a passionate three months.
Not looking for anybody who says the distance is nothing before they have done it. Not looking to be the one who always travels, having now been that person for two years. And not looking for anything that has to happen after nine at night on a weekday.
