From about September to January I work seven days a week and I am no company for anybody. The rest of the year I have an almost embarrassing amount of free time and can meet somebody for coffee on a Wednesday afternoon at four hours' notice. There is no middle. That is what freelancing in my line looks like and it has been the same shape for eight years.
Thirty two, Brooklyn, eight years into rope. Both of my partnerships came apart in the autumn, and in both cases the person told me afterwards that they had felt dropped, which is fair, because I had dropped them and had not warned anybody properly.
So I am warning people properly now. Four months of the year I am a bad partner. I will say so in advance, I will keep the standing evening if it is humanly possible, and I will be reachable, but I will not be much fun.
What I would like is somebody whose own life has enough in it that a thin autumn is survivable, and who will tell me directly when I am being neglectful rather than waiting to see whether I notice, since I usually do not.
Not looking for anybody who needs constant contact. Not looking for a partner who will keep score across a year. And not looking for anything that requires me to commit to a specific weekend more than a month out, because I genuinely do not know.
