I work eleven hour shifts on my feet in a hospital and by Friday my body is a rumour. Anybody who wants to be my partner in this has to understand a fairly dull physical fact: what I have to offer on a Saturday evening is not the same thing I have to offer on a Monday afternoon, and it is not close.
Forty one, the Bronx, four years in. Mondays and the alternate Tuesday are genuinely mine and I am a different person on them. That is the whole of my availability and I have stopped apologising for the shape of it.
The partnership I had for two years ended when my department reorganised and my days moved. Neither of us handled that well. He kept saying we would find a way and I kept agreeing, and what actually happened was six months of cancelled evenings and one very tired conversation in a diner.
What I want now is somebody who will look at a rota with me before we start rather than after. If your free evenings are Friday and Saturday, I am sorry, and I mean it, because there is nothing either of us can do about that except find out now. I would like it regular and I would like it long. The same day, most weeks, for years, with somebody who understands that consistency is worth more to a person with my schedule than intensity ever will be.
Not looking for anything at short notice. Not looking for somebody who wants me lively in the evening. And not looking to be told I should change jobs.
