Two evenings a week, plus the hour afterwards that neither of you can leave, plus the messages in between, plus a Saturday every month or so because somebody is doing something. Add it up over a year and you have a relationship, whatever anybody calls it, and I do not think most people work that out before they are already in one.
I did not. I drifted into a thing that consumed more of my week than any partner I have had, and then had a genuinely confusing year trying to work out why I felt married to somebody who described me as a practice partner.
Thirty, Manhattan, five years in. What I want now is for both people to say the quiet part at the beginning. How many hours. Which hours. What we are to each other on the weeks when we do not tie anything. Whether either of us is going to be strange about the other seeing somebody.
That conversation is unglamorous and it is the single most useful thing I have learned in five years. I have had it twice and both times the other person was visibly relieved. So I am looking for somebody who wants a real amount of contact with one person and will admit it. I am also fine being told that is too much, straight away, which is a service to both of us.
Not looking for anything vague. Not looking for a man who says he does not like labels and then behaves like a boyfriend on alternate months. And not looking for anything that only exists on weekends.
