I have been doing this for fifteen years and I have been here for one. Everybody who could tell you anything about me is seven thousand miles away and does not use any of the same platforms. So when somebody sensibly asks around about me, they will find nothing, and I have watched two promising conversations end at exactly that point.
I do not think either of those women was wrong. If I were in their position I would do the same. What I have decided is that the answer is not to complain about it but to be extremely patient and extremely legible, which means saying what I am doing, doing what I said, and being entirely comfortable with a person taking six months to decide.
Forty, Brooklyn, fifteen years in. I go to two regular evenings and have started to know a few faces, which is the slow way and appears to be the only way.
What I want is a partnership rather than practice. I am here permanently. My work is here, my visa is settled, and I am not going home. So a person can reasonably invest in this without wondering whether I will vanish in the spring, which is apparently a common enough experience here to be worth addressing.
Not looking for anybody who wants to move quickly, because that would defeat the entire point of the above. Not looking for a practice arrangement. And not looking for someone who wants me to be exotic, which happens and is tiresome.
