Three years ago something went badly for me in this, badly enough that I stopped going anywhere for a year. When I started again I was living in a different borough and found myself among people who did not know me, did not know him, and had no idea any of it had happened. I could simply be a person who was new.
I have thought about that a great deal since. In a smaller city it would not have been available to me, and I am aware that the same feature protects people who deserve it a good deal less than I do. Both things are true and I have stopped trying to resolve them.
Twenty nine, Queens, five years in and about eighteen months back. What it means for anybody writing to me is that I have a history I will tell you about eventually and not in month one. It is not lurid and I did nothing I regret. It is just mine, and handing it over early has twice turned me into a subject rather than a person.
What I want is something slow and ordinary with one person. Somebody whose week I know. A standing evening. The unremarkable version that people who have had a bad time tend to want and are rarely offered.
Not looking for anyone who wants to know immediately what happened. Not looking for somebody who wants to be the person who fixes it. And not looking for a partner from my old circle, for reasons I hope are obvious.
