- Three years in theory. About eleven evenings in practice.

Between us we have two jobs, two children, one grandmother who needs seeing every Sunday and a commute each that eats two hours a day. We took this up three years ago with a great deal of enthusiasm and have managed roughly eleven evenings of it since. We have counted. It is eleven.
We are not posting to complain. We are posting because we have read a great many accounts of people practising twice a week for years and we would sincerely like to know how. Not in a bitter way. Practically. Which things did you give up, what does your Sunday look like, and did anybody in your house resent it.
We are both in our late thirties, out in the commuter belt because that is where the space was. When we do manage an evening it is genuinely one of the better things in our lives, which is exactly why the scarcity gets to us.
What we would like is another couple in the same position. Partly for company and partly because we suspect the answer involves either lowering our expectations or being much more ruthless with the calendar, and we would rather hear that from somebody who has done it than work it out over another three years.
Not looking for anything that requires travel on a weeknight. Not looking to be told to hire help, which we have costed and cannot. And not looking for a couple who will suggest a weekend away, because there is no weekend.
