Neither of us is from here and neither of us is from the same place as the other, so our relationship exists in a third country in a fourth language and has no home town at all. That sounds romantic and is mostly logistics: two sets of parents in two directions, two Christmases, and no default place to go when something goes wrong.
We are thirty five and thirty eight, Kreuzberg, together five years. She ties, I get tied, occasionally reversed when the mood takes us.
The reason it matters for this is that we have no inherited way of doing any of it. Every couple carries habits from somewhere, and where those come from two different somewheres you end up negotiating things other people never notice, including quite basic ones about how much gets said out loud and to whom.
What we would like is friends in a similar position. People whose lives are also assembled rather than inherited, and who have no particular expectation of what a couple is supposed to look like.
Not looking for a third, and not looking to be somebody's international curiosity. Not looking for people who will ask which of our countries does this better, which we are asked constantly and which is a dull question. And not looking for anything requiring travel, since between the two of us we have quite enough of it.
