I have been in this city for nineteen years and in this flat for twelve, and I intend to die in both. That is unusual enough here to be worth putting at the top of a post, because a great many of the people I have known in this have been on a three or five year plan whether or not they described it that way.
Forty four, Neukölln. Two long partnerships. The second ran eight years and ended when she took a post in Vienna, which we tried to survive across the distance for about a year before admitting that we were mainly having phone calls about trains.
What I have learned from all that is that the good part of a rope partnership arrives late. The first year is finding out. The second year is when it starts being the thing you wanted. Everything I care about in this happened after year two, and I have watched a lot of people leave in month fourteen convinced that they had seen what it was.
So I am looking for the slow version. One person, two evenings a week, no particular hurry, and a genuine intention on both sides to still be doing this in five years.
Not looking for anybody whose plans are provisional. Not looking for something occasional. And not looking to be anybody's Berlin chapter, which is a phrase I have heard used affectionately and which I have come to dislike.
