My lease has a clause about noise and my building employs a person whose actual job is enforcing it. The wall between my bedroom and the next unit is, I estimate, one sheet of drywall with ambitions. In eleven years of doing this I have not developed a skill I am prouder of than being completely silent on a Tuesday evening in a tower full of people watching television.
Thirty seven, downtown, eleven years in. I am being light about it because if you cannot be light about it you will find this city miserable. The truth is that a great deal of my planning has nothing to do with rope: which evening, whose place, how a guest gets in, and whether the desk needs a name in advance.
What I want is somebody who treats all of that as ordinary domestic negotiation rather than as evidence that this is sordid. It is not sordid. It is the same conversation everybody in a condo has about everything, including their in-laws visiting for a week.
Beyond the logistics I want the boring thing. One person, over years, with a standing evening and a set of habits. I cook badly and enthusiastically. I would like somebody who is still on the sofa at eleven at night talking about something else entirely.
Not looking for anybody who needs a house with a basement in it, because I do not have one and I am not going to. And not looking for a crowd around any of this.
