Somebody asked me last spring how many people were in my week and did not believe the answer. The answer was one. It has been one for most of the nine years I have been doing this, and when I say so in a room I can watch a person decide that I am either lying or unusually limited. Neither, as far as I can tell.
Thirty four, the east end. I understand why the assumption exists. A great many people here run several things at once, honestly and well, and there is nothing whatever wrong with it. It is simply not what I am like. I do not have the attention for it and I do not much enjoy the version of myself that tries.
What I want is one person, over years, with the rest of my life arranged around that rather than the other way round. I want to know how her mother is doing. I want a standing evening that both of us defend. I want to be the person she tells first when something happens at work.
The part that has cost me is that this reads as intensity when it is closer to the opposite. I will not be all over anybody in month one. I am slow, fairly dull about it, and what I am describing becomes serious in the third year rather than the third week.
If your week is already full and honestly described, I am not the right person, and I mean that with no judgement in it at all.
