When we met she had twelve years of this behind her and I had never done any of it, and the first year of our relationship was quietly shaped by that in ways neither of us could see at the time. I am the one writing this. I was the one with none.
We are thirty four and forty one, out towards Bolton, together four years. What happened in year one is that I deferred about everything, including a great deal that had nothing to do with rope. Where we ate. Whose friends we saw. She never asked me to and she hated it when she noticed, and by then it was a habit in both of us and it took a further year to get rid of.
What fixed it was, unglamorously, my getting good enough to have opinions, and her deliberately stepping back and allowing a few evenings to be worse than they needed to be. Neither of those is a pleasant thing to sit through. Both were necessary.
We are writing this because we would like to find other couples who arrived at it unevenly. Every time the subject comes up socially somebody says it is fine as long as you communicate, which is true and completely useless. The interesting part is the specifics of how an imbalance leaks into the rest of a shared life.
Friends, then. Not a third and not an arrangement of any kind. Two people, or another pair, willing to sit through a long dinner and a genuinely honest conversation about a first year that everybody describes as lovely and that was, for us, quite hard.
