Eight months ago we moved two hundred miles for her job, into a house we like, in a part of the country we are still learning, and we have not managed to meet one person who does any of this. We had assumed it would be straightforward. It has been the hardest social thing either of us has attempted as adults.
Thirty three and thirty five, out towards Bolton, together seven years and doing this for five. Where we came from we had a circle and it took about a year to build. Here, everybody appears to know everybody already, and being new means walking into something where twenty people are mid-conversation and nobody quite has a slot for two strangers.
That is nobody's fault and we do not think we are being excluded on purpose. A scene that tight is warm on the inside and simply has no obvious door. We have been to three things, spoken pleasantly to two people at each, and made no actual progress whatsoever.
So we are trying this instead. What we would like is one or two people who would meet us for dinner and, over time, tell us how any of it works here. We are easy company, we are not shy once we are past the first twenty minutes, and we are extremely willing to drive.
We are married, settled, and asking only for friends, which we have discovered is a far harder thing to ask a stranger for at our age than it was at twenty two.
