There was rope in every room. On the back of the bathroom door, in the hall cupboard, drying over the radiator all February, a bag by the front door permanently packed for an evening somewhere. None of that is a complaint about mess. It is that by the second year I could not tell where our relationship ended and his hobby started, and by the third neither could he.
We were fine, incidentally. Nobody behaved badly. It just quietly became the only subject, and the friends were all from it, and the holidays were arranged around it, and when it ended I discovered I had almost nothing left that was mine.
Thirty, north of the river, six years in. What I am wary of is not living with somebody, and it is certainly not the rope. It is being with a person for whom this is the whole architecture rather than one of several rooms. I would like to be with somebody who has a job they care about, or a sport, or a family they see, or frankly anything that means Sunday is not also about this.
I still want it, to be clear. I want a proper long partnership with a lot of rope in it. I would just like the rest of the week to exist as well.
Not looking for anyone whose entire social circle came out of this. Not looking to be somebody's only interest. And not looking for a partner who wants to move quickly, because I did that once and it took two years to unpick.
