In four years I have never been tied anywhere that was not booked by the hour with six other people at the far end of it. That is not a complaint about anybody. It is simply the only version of this I have ever had, and I have started to wonder what the other one is like.
Thirty one, east London, sharing a flat with one other person and a landlord who visits. So I cannot fix this on my own, and I know that saying so is asking for something. What I mean by it is that I would like to be with someone long enough, and settled enough with them, that an evening at home eventually becomes possible. Not next month. Eventually.
The public version has given me a lot. I learned to say the true thing out loud, in a flat voice, in front of strangers, because muttering was never an option. What it has not given me is any idea what happens between two people when nobody else is present and there is no clock on the wall telling us both when to stop.
So what I want is one person, over years, rather than a series. I would much rather learn the way somebody works than meet nine people once each and be pleasant to all of them.
Not looking for anyone who wants to begin this weekend. Not looking to be somebody's practice while they hold out for a proper partner. And not looking for a man who tells me the room full of people is the point, because I have heard that speech three times, always from someone with a flat of his own.
