Everything I have done in this has been an occasion. A date in the diary six weeks ahead, a room arranged, a bag packed the night before, a whole day of low grade nerves that I mistook for excitement for about four years. It is lovely and it is exhausting and it is not what I want any more.
What I want is a Tuesday. Somebody I live near enough to see without planning it, an hour after work, nothing announced to anybody, both of us still in the clothes we were wearing at six. Half an hour would do. Some evenings nothing at all would do, and we would eat something and go to bed.
Thirty eight, south east, six years in, and I am aware that what I am describing requires a kind of closeness that takes a long time to build and cannot be arranged in advance. I am not expecting it in month one. I am saying it is the destination, so that anybody who wants something more ceremonial than that can save themselves the trouble.
The version of this I keep meeting is a person who wants the whole production every time, and who is faintly disappointed by an ordinary evening. I have been that person's disappointment twice.
Not looking for anything that has to be documented. Not looking for someone who lives ninety minutes away, however good the conversation is, because I have tested that and I know how it ends. And not looking to be anybody's monthly highlight.
