Every account of this I have ever read stops at about month eight. The finding out, the early mistakes, the first time something goes properly right. Then it ends, as though the interesting part were over, and nobody anywhere writes about what a Tuesday looks like in year four.
That is the part I want and I cannot find a description of it. Not the drama. The maintenance. What you talk about when there is nothing new to discuss. Whether it stays twice a week or quietly drifts. What happens to it during a bad month at work. Whether the two of you still discuss it by then, or whether it has become something you simply do on a Thursday the way other couples put a programme on.
Thirty six, east side, nine years of rope and never past two and a half years with one person, twice, both times for reasons that had nothing to do with any of this.
So I am asking straightforwardly for the long version, and for somebody who wants the same. I would like to be bored together eventually. I would like a stretch where neither of us can remember what we did last Thursday because it has all run into one.
If you have had a partnership that ran five years or ten, I would genuinely like to hear about the middle of it, whether or not anything at all comes of the two of us.
