I would like to be a beginner alongside another beginner, and I have thought about why rather than just preferring it. The last time I learned something with a person who already knew it, I spent two years deferring to them about matters that had nothing to do with the subject, and I only saw the shape of it afterwards.
Thirty, outside the ring, about four months in. Slow, careful, reading a great deal, and entirely aware of how that sounds in a post like this.
What I want is somebody at roughly the same point, so that neither of us is the authority and both of us are responsible for ourselves. Two people working out what they think at the same speed, with all the awkwardness that involves, which I would honestly prefer to the smooth version. I would rather be embarrassed in front of somebody who is also embarrassed than competent in front of somebody who has been at this a decade.
I know the obvious objection. Two beginners take longer. That is true and I have accepted it. I would rather take four years and end up with a partnership that is level than take one and spend the next five inside a shape I did not choose.
Not looking for a teacher, however generous the offer. Not looking for somebody experienced who wants a project. And not looking to be talked out of this, which has now been attempted twice, kindly, and did not work on either occasion.
