Ten years ago I turned up doing one thing, this city filed me under it inside a month, and has declined every opportunity since to refile me. I have been at the other end of the rope for six of those years. People who have known me the entire time still introduce me as what I was.
Thirty four, the city centre. There is no malice in it and nobody to be cross with. A small scene runs on a mental index of about twenty names with a single word next to each, because that is how anybody keeps track of anything, and updating an entry takes years of evidence that nobody has the time to collect.
The practical cost is that the people who might be interested in the half of me they never see have no idea it is there. Twice now I have found out that somebody had assumed for a year that I would not be interested in something I would have been very interested in indeed.
So this post is the correction, in writing, where it cannot be misheard. Both directions, genuinely, across the same decade, and the balance moves around depending on the year and on who I am with. I am not evenly split and I do not believe anybody actually is.
What I want is a partner who arrives without the index entry. Somebody newer, or somebody who simply asks me. A long thing, years rather than months, with both directions in it because both are real rather than because we are taking turns to be fair.
