We ended it well, in front of forty people, and it was still awful

somebody who understands that this city means dating in public
Rope so far
Seven years, one partnership of four, ended in front of everybody.

We did it properly. No sides, no version circulating, no drunk evening where one of us said the unforgivable thing. Both of us behaved about as well as two people can manage, in front of forty witnesses, across roughly four months, and it was still one of the worst stretches of my life.

Thirty one, Salford, seven years in. What nobody warns you about is that behaving well in public is itself a piece of work. You arrive, you are pleasant to everyone, you leave at a normal hour, and then you sit in the car for a bit before starting it. Doing that fortnightly for a season takes something out of you that a private ending simply does not ask for.

We are past it now, mostly. We speak. Neither of us has left the scene, because neither of us should have to, and I would think less of both of us if one had gone quietly.

What I want next is somebody who understands that dating here happens in front of an audience, and who will not need reassurance every time I am civil to a person I used to live with. Also somebody who will not treat any of it as evidence about my character.

A long partnership, both directions, an evening a week. I am in absolutely no hurry. The last one taught me that the ending is a public event, which is an excellent reason to be careful about the beginning.

Two people who both already tie is its own arithmetic. These three cover it.
