Eleven months. That is what is left on the lease, and it is the number every conversation in this flat comes back to. Where we go, whether we can stay in the city at all, what happens to the furniture, whether the room we currently use for this exists in the next place. Nobody warns you that a housing contract can become the main character in a relationship.

We are thirty four and thirty six, out west, together five years. He ties, I am tied, and neither of us has ever wanted it the other way round.

The reason it belongs in a post about rope is that all of it needs a room. For eleven more months we have one. After that we honestly do not know. We are not being dramatic about it: we are two people on a fixed lease in a city where those are hard to replace, and we have watched three couples we like have their whole practice change because of a move they did not choose.

What we would like is friends who understand what that does to a year. People to eat with, talk to and be ordinary around. Ideally somebody who has been through a move like it and can tell us what they did about the room.

Not a third, which we will say once and then never again. Not anything organised. And not advice about the housing situation, which we have now had from everybody we have ever met.
