Here is the bill, itemised, because people agree to this in the abstract in January and find out what it means in March. Two evenings most weeks. Not two evenings when we both fancy it. Two that go in the calendar and stay there, plus the travel either side, plus the hour afterwards when neither of us is much good for anything.

Twenty nine, the south of the city, five years in. I have watched three things end and in every case what actually ended was the schedule, dressed up afterwards as something about feelings. Nobody ever says they have lost interest. They say work has got busy, and then it stays busy for four months, and then we are friends.

So I would rather be tedious about it at the top. If your evenings are unpredictable, or you have a course, or a band, or a second job, this will grind against you and neither of us will enjoy the grinding. That is not a criticism of any of those things. It is arithmetic.

What the two evenings buy is the only reason to pay them. Somebody who knows how I am doing before I have said anything, because they have seen it forty times. A relationship with enough hours in it to have a texture. I would like to be thoroughly bored with somebody one day. I would like the fourth year.

Not after anything monthly. Not after somebody keeping three arrangements going who wants to slot me into whichever gap survives the autumn.

Before you answer this one

You would be the one tying. These three are about what the person in the rope actually needs.
