Everything written about this is about the first six months. The nerves, the first conversation, the first evening, the enormous significance of everything. Nobody writes about the Tuesday in year three when you are both tired, it happens anyway, and it is quietly fine. That is the only part I actually want to know about.
Thirty, the south of the city, six years in, two partnerships behind me and neither got past about eighteen months. Both ended in the same place. The interesting part finished, neither of us had any idea what the next part was supposed to look like, so we read the flatness as a verdict and stopped.
Since then I have met two couples who are seven and eleven years in, and I have been shamelessly nosy at both of them. What they described was not thrilling and I found it enormously reassuring. Fewer evenings, most of them unremarkable, one or two very good ones a year, and an accumulated amount of knowing each other that they could not really explain.
So I want somebody who wants that and can describe it. If your answer to what year three is like is that it depends on chemistry, we will never get there. If your answer is a dull practical one about calendars and habits and what you do when one of you is having a bad autumn, I am extremely interested.
I am asking for the least glamorous thing on this board and I know it. That is deliberate, and if it appeals to you then we already agree about the important part.
