I am extremely good at this in writing. Two long distance things, one of them for nearly two years, and in a chat window I am articulate and confident and I know precisely what I want. I have no idea whether any of that survives contact with a room, and it has started to feel like something I ought to find out.
Twenty five, out west, three years of this and not one hour of it in person.
The nerve I am hitting is not about rope at all. It is that all of my fluency lives in a medium where I can take four minutes to answer. In person I am slower and much plainer, and I am worried that the version of me somebody would meet is a considerable step down from the one they have been talking to for a fortnight.
So I would like to meet early rather than build up another six weeks of correspondence, which is something I could do beautifully and which would only widen the gap. Somewhere ordinary, in daylight, an hour, with nothing at all attached to it. If I am dreadful company in person I would rather find that out over a coffee than after two months of being wonderful in writing.
I switch, in theory, and I am aware that phrase is doing a lot of work. What I want in the end is a partnership over years. What I want first is to find out whether I am a person or simply a very good typist.
