Can this method work as a release?

Image Back in school, we built basic electromagnets using nails, wire, and batteries. They functioned well enough but didn’t last very long. I’m curious if this could serve as a release mechanism? My guess is that most small batteries would eventually drain out, causing the key to drop. Not entirely sure though. Does anyone have thoughts on whether it will work? Pinkbottom
