Greetings to all of you!
As many of you might recall, I’ve been popping in and out over the last little while. Every so often, though, I like to stir up a more serious conversation.
Lately at college for my Social Care degree, we briefly discussed psychology—specifically how things like self-esteem shape our perceptions and personalities. This made me reflect on my younger self compared to who I am today; the two don’t always match easily. That shift in personality has brought new qualities and habits, but mostly it’s helped me feel more at ease with what I enjoy and boosted my confidence.
I want to start a somewhat intellectual discussion here. Please bear with me if this opening post is lengthy—but there’s a condensed version at the bottom if you need it.
Now, let’s get into the main topic…
How many of you can comfortably chat with another person about your sexual interests, whether online or in real life?
I used “sexual interests” as the focal point because I believe this is one of the most hidden aspects of our private lives that we rarely share. When people ask why we keep our sex lives so private, a common response is often simply, “Why not?!”
This has been on my mind for some time. Among those I stay in touch with, it seems less common than I expected for people to speak openly about themselves. Yet, many feel comfortable talking to me personally because I am open and honest without feeling awkward about it. It’s become something I accept naturally; I enjoy playing the role of an advice-giver respectfully, though I’ve rarely asked myself “why me?”
What I’ve observed over the years is that as I share more about my life experiences, it becomes easier to connect with others or discuss sensitive topics that might be weighing on them. It’s like revealing all your cards at once, prompting them to do the same, one card at a time.
I’d love to know how many people aren’t very open about their personal lives, and whether they wish they could be more so, or if it’s just part of their nature (i.e., preferring to keep their private life exactly that—private).
I’ve touched on these subjects with others in the past, such as:
- Childhood experiences (embarrassing memories, family dynamics, molestation history, my own personality)
- Teenage years (my sexual interests, how they changed over time, personal struggles both inside and outside school like bullying)
- Adult life (valued “life” moments so far, insights gained from the past, current self-perception/personality shifts, etc.) The reasons I bring these up vary, but I can happily explain my experiences to help others benefit.
Of course, not everyone is expected or able to share every positive or negative life event. We all have things we wish to keep private—it’s only human nature, even for me. Personally, however, I find it just as natural to share most parts of my life with others because I value sharing my experiences, regardless of how short they may be.
I’m hoping for your general thoughts on this. I know the community here isn’t always the best spot for serious discussion since we’re usually fetish-focused, but that’s precisely why I want to give it a try—many of you might relate or not.
What are your thoughts? How do/would you feel about being able to speak with someone who can discuss anything? Do you think “connection” could encourage more serious personal discussions for you?
SHORT VERSION Can you talk to people you know about the sensitive details of your life? (i.e. Personal Experiences, Sexual Interests, Moral Values) Have you ever helped someone open up about their personal life in a way that benefited them? Has anyone approached you to discuss your personal life for help or advice?
