I work in this building which houses several small businesses. Off to the side, there is an area separated from the public that only employees can enter. Inside, there are two additional rooms: one with a key accessible by all staff, and another that locks at 8 PM and requires upper management for access. Once the door closes behind you as you leave this inner room, it effectively traps you inside. By late afternoon, around four or five o’clock, people start leaving, so by six-thirty I’m usually alone except perhaps for a security guard. My routine is to bring in some heels and pace back and forth between these rooms. What appeals to me about the space are the cubicles and cabinets standing roughly six feet high, creating a maze-like atmosphere. Here’s my dilemma: The other day, wearing my heels (having left my shoes behind in the second room), I headed toward the room where I held a key. While wandering around, I heard the guard calling out to me. Peering through the doorway, I watched him enter that adjacent space. I quickly scurried into a cubicle and tucked my heels under a desk before stepping back out just as he was securing the door. I called out to ask why he was locking up so early at seven-thirty. He mentioned believing no one remained inside when he noticed I was barefooted. In a rush, I claimed my feet were sore and that I’d left my shoes in there. He looked confused but let me back in. If he hadn’t called out, I would have unknowingly walked right into him while still wearing heels. Even though he saw nothing amiss, I headed home feeling rather embarrassed.
