I could use some guidance regarding ice locks since I’m relatively new to ‘strict’ SB setups. Usually, I just ensure the keys are hard or painful to reach, but they don’t stay that way for long enough. Often, my situation involves being locked in bondage for about half an hour, yet when I tested an ice lock using a stocking and ring, it took nearly two hours to drop. Does anyone have ideas for a dependable 30-minute release mechanism? jessica x
Ice locks operate on basic physics. The melting rate of ice depends on the surface-to-volume ratio and the temperature difference between the ice itself and its surroundings. I'm simplifying it a bit here, but that's enough for now. For instance, a small ice cube melts quicker than a large one, and surprisingly, several smaller cubes melt at roughly the same rate as a single larger cube. Also, an ice cube will (obviously) melt faster in a warm room compared to a cold one! There is another factor: ice deforms and melts under pressure. If the key held up by the stocking lock has weight on it, for example, it presses down and melts the ice faster than if the key were just resting there (and it's also less likely to get caught). I experimented with ice locks using a metal loop inside an ice-filled container. I found that pulling on the loop—keeping it under tension—the loop moves through the ice by melting the material pressed against it and refreezing behind, effectively moving the loop through the solid mass (this is the same principle as ice-skates creating grooves via "pressure-melting" beneath the blades). So, for a half-hour lock, use one small ice cube in a warm room. The best solution I found was using nylon mesh bags designed for washing powder tablets—they are strong enough to handle significant tension without tearing from fingers or nails. Place an ice cube inside and thread the bag's drawstring through a link at the end of a short chain section, then loop it around and through a metal ring. This setup provided the release mechanism; padlocks secured me to the ring, while the other end of the chain attached to whatever else was needed. If I could reach the ice-bag, holding it added extra body heat and shortened the melting time. This method proved very reliable for durations ranging from 10 minutes up to an hour, depending on the cube size, tension level, and whether I warmed the ice with my hands.
