handling erections while in a chastity device

My girlfriend and I are new to BDSM and wanted to learn about chastity. The question we have for the community is: how do you handle erections while locked up? In my experience so far, it causes significant aching in the balls, often making me want to remove the device. Is simply enduring that pain part of the deal?
