Custom Ballet Shoes Made to Order

Here is a small piece of info for those who love ballet. Some months back, I decided to create an authentic practice outfit for ballet; including leotards and tights. My goal was realism, but locating pointe shoes with their signature crisscross ribbons that go up the leg turned out to be tricky. I eventually located a maker offering custom orders: Capezio. To my knowledge, they offer sizes ranging from standard to very large, along with numerous color options (mine are black). They are made of satin only, and I was pleasantly surprised by the price—just $100 for one pair. You have to send your measurements for the first order, but since they keep them on file, getting additional pairs should be easier. Once received, I found them surprisingly uncomfortable even when standing flat-footed. They lack padding and are not shaped specifically for left or right feet. There is absolutely no internal cushioning either. A couple of tips: They produce various pads and inserts to add comfort; I strongly suggest buying those along with invisible elastic (it helps secure the shoes better). Another tip is to practice your sewing, as the ribbons arrive unattached since their placement depends on each dancer’s unique style. DO NOT EVEN TRY TO STAND ON YOUR TOES!! You risk breaking an ankle or toes because brand new shoes are extremely stiff and won’t bend much until they are broken in.
